Prominent cosmetic dentist Dr. Kourosh Maddahi has partnered with Sterling Practice Management to present a series of webinars and workshops which address real-world challenges faced by dentists today and how to overcome them.
Dr. Maddahi, a practicing dentist for over 30 years, whose work has been featured on Oprah, The Doctors, 10 Years Younger, Entertainment Tonight, Extra and CNN, has built a renowned practice focused on Cosmetic Dentistry in the most competitive beauty market in the world: Beverly Hills.
Dr. Maddahi is no stranger to the rigors of life that dentists today have to deal with.
“When I started my practice, I was working from 8:00 in the morning till 8:00 at night, six days a week, running around between three different offices,” he says. “I felt I was working too hard, and I wasn’t growing fast enough. There were constant problems with staff. My practice was growing 5, maybe 10% but no matter what I tried, I couldn’t get it to expand and grow. I knew there had to be a better way.”
Dr. Maddahi decided to exclusively work from his private office in Beverly Hills. He sold his two smaller clinics, and decided to focus on what he loved most—performing difficult cosmetic and restorative dental procedures that would change people’s lives. This decision, however, came at a substantial cost.
“I was spending more money than I ever had, just to keep the office open,” Dr. Maddahi says.
However, because of his genuine enjoyment of cosmetic dentistry, Dr. Maddahi was determined to be successful in this field. But he was also realistic enough to understand that the success he dreamed of would not occur unless he changed something.
A chance meeting with a friend who had several successful businesses brought about the change he was looking for. “I thought I knew a lot more about running a business than he did,” says Kourosh. “Yet he was no longer working directly in the companies he had built, and he continued to make money. His businesses were expanding, and he had time to focus on other things that were important to him.
“When I asked him what he was doing, he said he was using a specific management technology. So I went to his office, and he showed me the approach he used to manage his businesses and his staff. His staff were happy and they didn’t have much turnover.
“His companies were all expanding, and if there was a period where that growth stopped, he knew what to do to get it going again.
“This was what I had been looking for—consistent expansion and growth. So I started using the same management technology and brought it into my practice. Changes started to happen almost immediately and I’ve never looked back.”
Dr. Maddahi now works four days a week, totaling about 30 hours. He refers out much of his routine dental work so he can concentrate on cosmetic dentistry. “This year I’ve cut down even more,” he says. “I see almost exclusively patients that want the cosmetic dentistry services I love to deliver.”
Less time at the office, however, has definitely not meant less income, with Kourosh’s multi-million dollar practice regularly welcoming patients from across the United States and abroad.
The constant employee problems and staff turnover are also a thing of the past. Says Dr. Maddahi, “Now, of my three hygienists, one has been with me for more than 20 years, one for 15 years and the other for 7 years. My assistant has been with me for 14 years. My office manager—15 years. I no longer worry about staff. And even if somebody moves away, I have the tools to find, test and hire the right people, and make sure they work well within the structure of my practice.”
Sterling’s CEO, Kevin Wilson, says: “We are delighted to partner with Dr. Maddahi. We at Sterling are very familiar with the challenges faced by dentists as practice owners. In fact, we have been helping dentists to overcome those challenges for over 35 years with the exact same management principles Dr. Maddahi uses in his practice.
“Dr. Maddahi comes with a wealth of experience and technology, and he is living proof that a dentist can succeed very well in today’s socioeconomic environment. We feel that his experience, combined with his dynamic seminar presentation skills, will bring more reality to the challenges faced by dentists today and provide a path for all dentists not only to overcome those challenges but to meet and exceed their goals for their practice.”
